Jewel Orchid Ludisia Discolor

Jewel Orchid Ludisia Discolor

£15.00

A compact, terrestrial orchid prized for its striking foliage rather than its flowers. Leaves are velvety, dark burgundy to deep chocolate with contrasting pale veins or speckles. Stems are creeping and form low rosettes, making it ideal for terrariums, small pots, or as a tabletop houseplant. Produces delicate white to pale pink star-shaped blooms on slender spikes, typically in cooler months. Easy to care for and appreciated for its ornamental leaves and gentle growth habit.

Light

Bright, indirect light is best. Avoid direct sun, which can scorch leaves. Tolerates lower light better than many orchids, making it suitable for shaded spots or rooms with east- or north-facing windows.

Temperature & Humidity

Ideal daytime temperatures: 65–80°F (18–27°C). Night temps can drop to 55–60°F (13–16°C). Prefers moderate to high humidity (50–70%). Increase humidity with a tray of pebbles and water, a humidifier, or grouping with other plants.

Watering

Keep the potting mix evenly moist but not waterlogged. Water when the top 1–2 inches feels slightly dry. Use room-temperature water and avoid hard water if possible. Reduce watering slightly in cooler months.

Soil & Potting Mix

Use a well-draining, airy mix: fine-grade orchid bark or a mix of bark, perlite, and a bit of peat or coco coir works well.

Fertilizer

Feed with a balanced, diluted orchid or houseplant fertilizer (about 1/4–1/2 strength) every 2–4 weeks during the growing season (spring–early autumn).

Flowering

Produces small white to cream flowers on thin spikes, typically in late winter to spring. Good light and consistent care encourage blooming.

Pruning & Grooming

After flowering, trim spent flower spikes at the base.
