Codiaeum variegatum (commonly called croton) is an evergreen tropical shrub prized for its bold, colorful foliage. Leaves vary widely in shape and size and display vivid patterns of green, yellow, red, orange, and purple, often with striking veins or speckles. Crotons are typically grown as container houseplants in temperate climates and can reach several feet tall with proper care.

Light

Bright, indirect light is best to maintain vibrant leaf color. Morning sun or a few hours of filtered/bright indirect light works well.

Temperature & Humidity

Ideal temperature: 65–85°F (18–29°C). Keep above 60°F (16°C). Sensitive to drafts and sudden temperature changes. Prefers medium to high humidity. Increase humidity with a pebble tray, grouping, or a humidifier if indoor air is dry.

Watering

Keep soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Water when the top 1 inch (2.5 cm) of soil feels slightly dry. Use room-temperature water and water evenly so moisture reaches the root ball.

Soil & Potting

Use a well-draining potting mix (standard indoor mix amended with perlite or orchid bark is good).

Fertilizer

Feed every 4–6 weeks during the growing season (spring–summer) with a balanced liquid houseplant fertilizer at half strength.

Toxicity

Croton is toxic if ingested. Keep away from children and pets.
