Calathea roseopicta 'Rosy' is a striking tropical houseplant prized for its broad, oval leaves with deep green upper surfaces and prominent pink to rose-colored patterns that vary by cultivar. The undersides are typically purplish, creating dramatic contrast when leaves move or fold. Grows compactly to about 1–2 feet tall, making it an excellent statement plant for shaded indoor spots and humidity-friendly rooms like bathrooms or kitchens.

Light

Bright, indirect light. Avoid direct sun, which can scorch leaves and fade the rose-pink pattern. Tolerates lower light but growth will slow.

Temperature & humidity

Ideal temperature: 65–80°F (18–27°C). Keep above 60°F (15°C); avoid cold drafts and sudden drops. High humidity required for best leaf color and to prevent edges browning. Aim for 60%+ humidity. Use a humidifier, pebble tray, or group with other plants. Regular misting helps but isn’t a substitute for consistent humidity.

Watering

Keep soil evenly moist but not waterlogged. Water when the top 1/2–1 inch (1–1.5 cm) of soil feels slightly dry. Use room-temperature, filtered, or distilled water if your tap water is hard or chlorinated; Calathea is sensitive to salts and fluoride (brown leaf tips can indicate this).

Soil & potting

Use a well-draining, aerated potting mix: peat- or coco-based mix with perlite and a little orchid bark works well.

Fertilizer

Feed lightly during the growing season (spring–summer): balanced liquid fertilizer at 1/4–1/2 recommended strength every 4–6 weeks. Skip feeding in autumn and winter.
