Shield Aralia

£6.00

Shield Aralia (Polyscias scutellaria) is a tropical houseplant valued for its glossy, round to shield-shaped leaves and tidy, upright habit. It typically grows as a compact shrub with dark green foliage and a smooth trunk, making it a good choice for tabletops or floor displays in bright, indirect light.

Light

Bright, indirect light is ideal. Avoid direct midday sun, which can scorch the leaves. Tolerates lower light but will grow more slowly and may become leggy.

Temperature

Keep between 60–75°F (16–24°C). Protect from temperatures below 50°F (10°C) and cold drafts.

Humidity

Prefers medium to high humidity. Mist occasionally, place on a pebble tray, or use a humidifier if your home is dry.

Watering

Water when the top 1–2 inches (2.5–5 cm) of soil feels dry. Water thoroughly until excess drains, then empty the saucer. Avoid letting the plant sit in water; do not let soil dry out completely for extended periods.

Soil & Potting

Use a well-draining potting mix (standard indoor mix with added perlite or orchid bark works well). Repot every 2–3 years or when rootbound, choosing a pot only one size larger.

Fertilizer

Feed with a balanced, water-soluble fertilizer diluted to half-strength every 4–6 weeks during the growing season (spring–summer). Reduce feeding in fall and winter.

Propagation

Propagate from stem cuttings in water or soil. Take 4–6 inch (10–15 cm) cuttings below a node, remove lower leaves, and root in water or moist potting mix.

Toxicity

Many Aralia/Polyscias varieties are considered mildly toxic to pets if ingested. Keep out of reach of children and animals.
