Calathea insigne, also known as the Rattlesnake Plant or Peacock Plant, is a striking member of the Marantaceae family. Native to the tropical regions of South America, particularly Brazil, this plant is renowned for its exquisite foliage and unique patterns.

Light

• Bright, indirect light. Avoid direct sun which scorches leaves; low light tolerated but growth slows.

Water

• Keep soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Water when top 1/2 inch (1 cm) feels slightly dry. Use room-temperature, filtered or distilled water if possible to avoid leaf brown edges from hard water.

Humidity

• High humidity preferred (60%+). Use a humidifier, pebble tray, or group with other plants. Regular misting helps but isn’t a substitute for steady humidity.

Temperature

• Comfortable indoor temps between 65–80°F (18–27°C). Keep away from drafts and sudden temperature changes; avoid below 60°F (15°C).

Soil & Potting

• Use a well-draining, peat-based potting mix with perlite. Repot every 1–2 years or when root-bound, preferably in spring.

Fertilizer

• Feed monthly during spring and summer with a balanced, water-soluble houseplant fertilizer at half strength. Do not over-fertilize.

Toxicity

• Non-toxic to pets but check individual reactions.
