Asparagus fern (Asparagus setaceus) — despite its common name, not a true fern but a member of the lily family — is prized for its fine, feathery foliage and airy, arching stems. Its soft, lacy appearance makes it a popular ornamental houseplant and a graceful choice for hanging baskets or elevated pots.

Light

Asparagus ferns prefer bright, indirect light. They can tolerate lower light conditions but will grow best with a few hours of filtered sunlight each day. Avoid placing them in direct sunlight, as this may scorch the leaves.

Temperature

Asparagus ferns prefer moderate temperatures, ideally between 18-24°C. Protect them from cold drafts and sudden temperature changes, which can stress the plant.

Watering

Keep the soil consistently moist but not soggy. Water the plant when the top inch of the soil feels dry to the touch. Ensure good drainage to prevent root rot, which can be caused by overwatering. During the growing season (spring and summer), increase watering frequency, but reduce it during the winter months when the plant is dormant.

Humidity

Asparagus ferns thrive in higher humidity levels. If the air in your home is dry, consider placing a humidifier nearby or regularly misting the leaves. Another option is to place the pot on a tray filled with pebbles and water, ensuring that the pot does not sit directly in the water.

Fertilisation

Feed your asparagus fern with a balanced liquid fertiliser every four to six weeks during the growing season. Avoid fertilising during the winter months when the plant's growth slows down.

Potting and Soil

Use a well-draining potting mix, ideally one formulated for houseplants. Repot every couple of years to refresh the soil and provide more space for growth. Choose a pot with drainage holes to facilitate proper water flow.

Pruning

Regular pruning helps maintain the plant’s shape and encourages bushier growth. Remove any dead or yellowing fronds to promote overall health. Be cautious, as the foliage can be quite delicate.
